Releasing the first Official community plan since 1995; it covers more topics and focuses on better land management. The City is looking to centre development around a dense downtown core, as well as village settings throughout the region, which will allow people to walk to work and amenities. Improving transit and cutting greenhouse emissions are also initiatives in the plan, while it gives clearer guidance for Council to proceed with development. Some height restrictions on new buildings have received the go ahead to rise. The downtown core will now accept plans for buildings up to 24 stories, while apartment dense areas could see changes from 4 to 6 storey heights. Victoria Victoria (pronounced /vɪkˈtɔəriə/) is the capital city of British Columbia, Canada. Located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, Victoria is a major tourism destination seeing more than 3.65 million visitors a year who inject more than one billion dollars into the local economy.[3] Victoria is a cruise ship port where cruise liners stop at Ogden Point terminal. The city also receives economic benefits from its close proximity to Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt, the Canadian militarys main Pacific naval base. Downtown Victoria also serves as Greater Victoria's regional downtown, where many night clubs, theatres, restaurants and pubs are clustered, and where much larger regional public events occur. In particular, Canada Day fireworks displays and Symphony Splash and Victoria Electronic Music Festival concerts draw tens of thousands of Greater Victorians and visitors to the downtown core. The city has hosted sports events including the 2009 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, 2005 Ford World Men's Curling Championship tournament, the 1994 Commonwealth Games, and 2006 Skate Canada. At the southern tip of Vancouver Island, Victoria is not only the provincial capital, but also the most British flavored city in Canada. In 1843, Victoria was established by the Hudsons Bay Company as a British fur-trading post. By the late 1800s, the Gold Rush Era had left its stamp on the city with a growing population and a bustling market square. Many of the buildings from that colorful time in history have survived to this day.

Victoria -- a new pubic washroom may soon be open for business on Langley street. With council's approval, people will have another place to pee late at night near Bastion Square. It's part of the City's push to clean up downtown, and it's a relief for nearby businesses which say the square is regularly used as a bathroom. On Thursday city staff will urge council to buy a new loo, tried and tested in Portland, Oregon. The Portland loo will cost about $100000 to purchase and install. That's $60000 more than the public urinal installed at Pandora and Government streets. City staff have seen great success with the free-standing urinal, but the new loo is female-friendly, with increased privacy and a place to sit. If approved, the Portland loo will be ready to use in just a few months, and more could pop up downtown as the budget becomes available. Follow Astrid Braunschmidt on Twitter: www.twitter.com

www.ctvvancouverisland.ca VICTORIA - The City of Victoria has come up with an Economic Development Plan, and it has won unanimous approval from Council. It will cost Victoria $1.5 million over the next three years, but the City says it says will bring in upwards of $15 million annually. That is, if it is adopted by the new council after next month's municipal election. Current Mayor Dean Fortin says it is a plan that he hopes will stay, no matter who is in power. Mayoral candidate Paul Brown says he would prefer to see a plan that the entire region pays for, if it benefits municipalities outside of the City of Victoria.
